Population

The Ann Arbor, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 374,679 in 1970 to 625,650 in 2010. That was an increase of 67.0 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 13,013 in 1970 to 46,635 in 2010. That was an increase of 258.4 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 3.5 percent to 7.5 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 60.1 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) accounted for the largest share of population increase in the first two periods, and NIM surpassed it in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the main source of population increase in the first period, and NIM was the principal factor in population increase in the two most recent periods
